Meet the Reporters

Staff Writer: Andrew Edwards

1. Why did you join the Horizon?
I joined the horizon staff to gain some real reporting experience and just because I like reporting, it forces me to visit people and places in the community to gather information firsthand and I learn a lot of things that I wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to.  I like to be well informed, so the horizon seems like a good place to stay current with events on and around campus.
2.What do you hope to bring to the Horizon?
I hope to bring my unique perspective to the Horizon.
3. What is one book you think everyone should read?
I think everyone should read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley because our society is looking more and more like the one described in that book.
4.  Michael Jackson was…  The king of pop.  And innocent.
5.  During the renaissance I would have been…  a sculpture model… probably.

6.  The main thing America needs today is… an unbiased, hard-working media that seeks to present the truth about national and global issues and not stories about celebrity scandals or pseudo politics.

Staff Writer: Max Strobel

1. Why did you join the Horizon?
To expand my journalistic knowledge, abilities and experience a new form of media.

2. What do you hope to bring to the Horizon?
Strong interview skills, fun spins to stories, and great photos!

3. What is one book you think everyone should read?
Lunar Park, Breat Easton Ellis is my favorite author and though American Psycho and Less then Zero got all the attention, Lunar Park takes the cake.

4. Michael Jackson was a…
Always screaming for some reason

5. During the Renaissance I would have been a…
Killed for my art

6. The main thing America needs today is…
An economic revolt!

Staff Writer: Nick Rorem

1. Why did you join the Horizon?
Firstly, a writer is something a computer will never be able to replace.  I’ve always enjoyed writing articles, and my dad was a journalist himself.  I also went see George Plimpton speak as a teenager – I think less than a year before he died – and that really influenced me.

2. What do you hope to bring to the Horizon?
A creative, descriptive, accurate and entertaining writing style.  I’d also like to bring energy to the staff and inspire some great story ideas.

3. What is one book you think everyone should read?
My dad would probably slit my throat if I didn’t mention Ernest Hemingway, but I’m going with Steinbeck’s East of Eden because it’s probably the most complete novel I’ve ever read.

4. Michael Jackson was a…
Secretly the greatest practical joker ever.  Check out Brett Ratner’s anecdote about him on Jimmy Kimmel Live if you haven’t seen it – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9apPPGjPNLU

5. During the Renaissance I would have been a…
I was Niccolo Machiavelli in one of my past lives.

6. The main thing America needs today is…
Wow… I plan on either minor-ing in Political Science or double-majoring.  Dumbing it down, I think the U.S. government needs to be more open-minded, that it needs to become less restrictive on both people and corporations, and that in some aspects it should consider rolling back to a pre-WWII mind state.

Staff Writer: Gabriella Corrigan

My name is Gabrielle Corrigan. I am currently finishing up my Associates Degree in Journalism here at Whatcom Community College. I hope to transfer next year to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where I would like to continue my studies in Journalism and French. Other than that, I always enjoy a good bite to eat.

1. Why did you join the Horizon?

I joined because I wanted to explore journalism in an actual journalistic setting. Also, I am really excited to help the Horizon staff inform its students of the unique people and events happening in the Whatcom community.

2. What do you hope to bring to the Horizon?
Maybe a little humor, maybe a little fashion, or maybe a couple of tears, I am really not sure, but I am ready to express my flare on my articles.

3. What is one book you think everyone should read?
Sophie’s World  by Jostein Gaarder

4. Michael Jackson was a…
The jive in my life.

5. During the Renaissance I would have been a…
The king’s jester. All about the tights and hat.

6. The main thing America needs today is…
More dessert or just a lot more love.
